Wandering Aimlessly

All things Greek

I can't believe how behind we are with this thing!

Leaving Italy it was on to Athens and our first taste of a genuine hostel. First we had a 2 hour delay at the airport for no other reason than we were flying ApiEagles - the Greek budget carrier that wait for the passengers to board before putting fuel in plane. We soon learned this was to be called "Greek Time".

Got into the hostel at around dinner time after wading through the roadworks and hookers - we were in the red light district apparently - and were told where our shoebox was. Double room at this place means 2 people in one coffin. Toilet was in the hallway but we had our own shower at least. More like a tap and a drain in the middle of the floor, in room measuring about 4 foot square.

We couldn't stand being there so we went for walk and sorted out our plans to move to different accomodation. Souvlaki for dinner.

After a much disturbed sleep, we shifted our gear the next morning to a budget hotel that felt like the Hilton in comparison. Nice!

Enough bitching about that now... what is it with Greeks and sex? Every news stand is 75% porn and half the souvenirs have a sexual theme. And some of them were even hetrosexual!!! I heard once the Greeks claim to have invented sex - and the Italians claim to have introduced a woman to it. After visiting Athens, I think the Greeks really do believe it.

We did a bit of a tour around Athens on a tour train. Not really a train but a vehicle with a shell of a train engine and 3 or 4 carriages for the punters. It just drove around for about 40 mins and the driver pointed out the sights. A bit weak coz the driver could barely speak English (or his accent was really thick) but it helped us get our bearings and gave us an idea of what was where.

The highlight was the Acropolis - great view and heaps to see. We wandered down to Hadrian's Arch and the Temple of Zeus later in the arvo and did a bit of souvenir shopping. One day in Athens was enough though and we were itching to get to Santorini (Greek Island) the next day. Had souvlaki for dinner and lunch for that matter.

More to come...
